German has three genders and very little that reliably predicts which one a noun takes. Learning a noun and learning its gender are two separate facts, and the gender is the one that fades first — you will remember that Tisch means table long after you have stopped being sure whether it is der or das.

How a round goes

  1. 1A noun appears on its own, without its article.
  2. 2Pick der, die or das.
  3. 3You are told immediately whether you were right, with the correct article shown either way.
  4. 4Twenty nouns per round, drawn from the CEFR levels you are studying.
Why it is built this way

Why gender gets its own game

Most courses teach you the noun and mention the gender in passing, which trains recognition and nothing else. You end up able to read der Tisch without ever being able to produce it.Splitting gender into its own drill forces the recall directly, with nothing else to think about. There is no timer, because guessing fast is not the skill — the goal is for the right article to arrive before you have consciously reasoned about it.

What it trains

  • Recall the article as part of the word rather than as an afterthought.
  • Notice the suffix patterns that are genuinely reliable — -ung, -heit and -keit are always feminine, -chen and -lein always neuter.
  • Stop hesitating mid-sentence over an article you half-know.

Questions about Der Die Das

Are there rules for German noun gender?
Some, and they are worth knowing: nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft or -tion are feminine; -chen and -lein are neuter; -er agent nouns are usually masculine. But they cover a minority of vocabulary, which is why the rest has to be drilled.
Which nouns appear in the game?
Nouns from the CEFR levels you have selected in Settings, so the game keeps pace with what you are studying rather than throwing B1 vocabulary at an A1 learner.
