How a round goes
- 1Five German words on one side, five English meanings on the other.
- 2Tap a pair to clear it. A correct pair adds half a second to the clock; a wrong one costs two.
- 3Cleared tiles are replaced and the grid keeps refilling.
- 4The round ends when the clock does.
Why it is built this way
Why replacements arrive two pairs at a time
If a cleared pair were replaced one at a time, the two new tiles would always be each other’s match — a free point that requires reading neither of them.Refilling two pairs at once means every new tile has a plausible alternative on the board, so you have to actually read it. It is a small detail that decides whether the game tests vocabulary or reflexes.
What it trains
- Cut the delay between seeing a German word and knowing what it means.
- Find the words that are slow rather than merely unknown — those are the ones that break your speaking.
- Build tolerance for time pressure without the stakes of a real conversation.
Questions about Speed Match
- Does a wrong answer end the game?
- No, it costs two seconds. The clock is the only thing that ends a round, so a bad guess is expensive but recoverable.
- Can I beat my own score?
- Yes — your personal best for each game is stored and shown on the games page when you are signed in.
