Reading German and writing German are different skills, and most vocabulary practice only trains the first. Word Hunt runs in the harder direction: you are given the English meaning and have to come up with the German.

How a round goes

  1. 1An English definition appears.
  2. 2Four German words are offered. One is right.
  3. 3Twenty seconds per round; running out counts as a miss.
  4. 4Ten rounds per game.
Why it is built this way

Why the wrong answers are the same level as the right one

The three distractors are pulled from the same CEFR level as the answer, not at random from the whole library. A random distractor is often obviously too advanced or too basic, which lets you eliminate it without knowing any German.Keeping them level-matched means the only way to rule one out is to actually know what it means. The game stays a vocabulary test rather than a difficulty-spotting test.

What it trains

  • Produce German from meaning, which is what speaking and writing require.
  • Recall under mild time pressure, closer to how vocabulary has to surface in conversation.
  • Separate words you genuinely know from words you only recognise on the page.

Questions about Word Hunt

How is this different from the study sessions?
Study sessions ask you to type the word into a full sentence and feed your answer into the spaced repetition schedule. Word Hunt is multiple choice, timed, and does not affect your review queue — it is a warm-up, not a substitute.
Does the timer make it harder to learn?
Twenty seconds is generous for recall and tight for looking something up. It is there to stop you deliberating your way to an answer you do not actually know.
