A German verb is not one word, it is a set: fahren, fährt, fuhr, gefahren, and it takes sein rather than haben. Knowing the infinitive and guessing the rest is how you end up saying ich habe gefahrt.

How a round goes

  1. 1A verb appears with one form requested — third-person present, simple past, past participle, or its Perfekt auxiliary.
  2. 2Choose from four options.
  3. 3Fifteen rounds, mixing all four form types.
  4. 4Irregular verbs are marked, so you know when a form has to be memorised rather than derived.
Why it is built this way

Why the wrong answers come from the same verb

Offering gegangen as a wrong answer against getrunken teaches nothing — the two are so obviously unrelated that you can pattern-match your way past the question without recalling anything.Every distractor in Verb Forms is built from the verb being asked about: the irregular form regularised (gehen → gehte, trinken → getrinkt, fahren → fahrt), a mis-formed ge- participle, or one of that verb’s own other principal parts. Those are the mistakes learners actually make. Getting one of them wrong tells you something; getting getrunken wrong does not.

What it trains

  • Produce all four principal parts, not just the infinitive.
  • Pick the right auxiliary — haben or sein, and the verbs that take either depending on meaning.
  • Recognise which verbs are irregular before you conjugate one incorrectly out loud.

Questions about Verb Forms

What are principal parts?
The small set of forms every other form of a German verb is built from: the third-person present, the simple past (Präteritum), the past participle (Partizip II), and whether the verb takes haben or sein in the perfect.
Why does haben or sein matter so much?
Using the wrong auxiliary is one of the most audible mistakes a learner can make. Verbs of motion and change of state generally take sein; most others take haben; a handful take either, and the choice changes the meaning.
